OMAHA, Neb. — Hundreds of customers experienced power outages after Unit 5 at the North Omaha Power Station was taken offline due to a steam tube failure, according to the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD).
OPPD confirmed that no injuries were reported and said the incident did not expose the public or workers to additional health risks. The unit remains offline as crews continue inspections to determine the cause of the failure.
Despite those assurances, neighbors in North Omaha say the incident has renewed long-standing concerns about the aging coal-fired units at the plant and potential long-term health impacts on the surrounding community.
OPPD maintains that safety systems functioned as designed and emphasized that customer safety remains a top priority while the inspection continues.
